The best winter events for 2021/22

Explore on foot, Shopping, Towns and villages

As the season changes, these winter warmers will help you fight off the chill and get you into the festive spirit. We highlight the best winter events

The Moffat Christmas festival

The Moffat Christmas Festival is always the highlight of the town’s festive season. There’s a high street takeover with the Christmas market, a fancy dress competition, entertainment including a grand raffle and live music, plus Santa usually makes a dramatic appearance – all leading up to the official Christmas lights switch on. (28 November)

Panto in Moffat…

The panto season kicks off with the classic Dick Whittington at Moffat’s Old Well Theatre. The Moffat panto usually has a few familiar faces in the cast. We remember when Miles took part in A Christmas Carol a few years ago with not one but two parts. He brought the house down. Oh yes he did! His first scene involved drinking a glass of wine. So no rehearsal required! (24 November-4 December)

…and in Dumfries

The Theatre Royal Dumfries, Scotland’s oldest working theatre, is showing Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs (27 November-11 December). All our favourite characters will be in attendance including Prince Charming, the evil queen and the dame. And, if you can take any more excitement, Abbamania, Europe’s famous Abba tribute act, will be putting on what is set to be a brilliant singalong night. (19 December)

The Winter Art and Craft Fair

A new event, the Winter Art and Craft Fair, is coming to Dumfries this year. Expect a wonderful mix of contemporary visual artwork showcasing local independent artists, which will be available to view and buy at Easterbrook Hall. Might be just the place to pick up a quirky gift for the creative types in your family? (20/21 November)

The Dumfries Christmas Fair

The Dumfries Christmas Fair is packed to the rafters with gifts and goodies. Stalls from Neal’s Yard to Jo’s Vintage Centre and Hood’s Honey will be tempting us with their wares. Now’s the time to stock up, nice and early. (15/16 November)

Glasgow Christmas markets

Take the X71 bus from Moffat to Glasgow and in just 90 minutes you’ll be at a truly international Christmas market with traders representing 32 nationalities from around the globe. Stock up on artisan products, toast the season with German beers and join in the fun on the vintage helter-skelter and carousel. (6 November-31 December)

The Big Burns Supper

And when you’ve had your fill of mistletoe and wine, there’s the Big Burns Supper. For 2022, the Dumfries festival has seriously upped its game with an impressive line-up including comedians Rosie Jones, Nish Kumar, Rich Hall and Russell Kane, 70s Scottish punk rockers the Skids, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the London African Gospel Choir with the Bob Marley Songbook, plus many more acts. After last year’s virtual event with Janey Godley, this is set to be one very happy return. (14-30 January)
